Turrican Is An Amazing Classic
The Return of a Classic
Turrican Anthology Vol.1 is a set of 90’s retro classics that have been ported to the Nintendo Switch. Recently refreshed, Turrican Vol.1 is an addicting platform shooter with many new additions from the original games. These additions include rewind, new control schemes, and a map feature that allows you to view the entire stage as you play. Did I mention the anthology includes original not before seen artwork along with (some new, some original) music from all the games in Vol.1? It does.
The games included are Turrican 1, Turrican 2, Super Turrican (as well as a director’s cut of the same game), and Mega Turrican: Score Attack. All of them have been beautifully rendered into a snappy experience on both the Switches’ screen and the big screen. This makes this title a must have in your collection. All five games hold up and are wonderful to play as you blast your way through hordes of enemies that pop up from all over on your journey. Players that have a harder time in the game, will fall in love with the rewind feature, as any mistake you make can easily be ‘rewound’ so you can try again and again. For those of you wondering, yes you can turn off the rewind and map features by selecting what mode you wish to play before starting a game.
Soundtracks can make or break a game, and do I have news for you. The soundtrack for Turrican is unlike any other. I was blown away by the amazing tracks for each level as they fit perfectly and heightened my experience. Thanks to the port on the Switch, I can listen to all the tracks these games have to offer through the jukebox option for each game (except for Mega Turrican).
I may have fallen in love with Turrican, but for a somewhat pricy $34.99 it makes this a little harder to pick up this title. Don’t get me wrong, this game is a wonderful purchase for any gamer, young or old. It is a great opportunity for classic gameplay thirst or reliving an old adventure. It is just hard to justify such a large price tag for a remake. All in all though I still recommend picking up this anthology as it is truly is a blast of games like no other, well maybe a little like Metroid. I can’t wait to pick up and play Volume 2.
